AAA Air Support Is International – Aerospace Industry Europe

Building upon our established leadership in the domestic aerospace market, AAA Air Support continues making great inroads into the global aerospace and domestic aviation market, as well.

In the realm of international aerospace interests, Europe, with its strong economic history in shaping the technological frontiers, supports some of the largest companies in the global aerospace and defense industry. These companies include Safran, BAE Systems, Thales, Rolls Royce, and Leonardo.

Along with the United States, which still leads the world in this arena, European countries have made great strides in manufacturing, production, innovation, and financial growth.

According to one source,

“Since 2016, the turnover of the European aerospace and defense industry increased in all four subsectors, namely civil aeronautics, land and naval, military aeronautics, and space. In 2019, the total turnover of the European aerospace and defense industry was over 250 billion euros.”

A Brief Look at the Aerospace Industry in Europe

Of the 27 nations that make up the European Union (EU), France is the leading European market based on aerospace exports. Collectively, the European aerospace and defense industry employs approximately 890,000 workers while generating almost 260 billion euros (USD275 billion) between 2015 and 2019.

Among the major European aerospace companies engaged in the industry, Airbus is the leading firm by revenue, generating more than 50 billion euros globally between 2007 and 2020.

Statista recently reported that,

“Airbus SE is Europe’s largest aerospace and Defense Company. As of 2021, the French aircraft manufacturer was valued at 94.73 billion U.S. dollars. This was 30 billion U.S. dollars more than its nearest competitor – fellow France-based Safran SA.”

As of late 2021, these were the top five aerospace and defense companies by market capitalization in Europe (in billion U.S dollars):

  • Airbus SE 94.73
  • Safran SA 64.3
  • TransDigm Group 33.24
  • BAE Systems PLC 22.73
  • Thales SA 21.82

A Brief Look at International Airports and Ground Support in Europe

Europe as a whole sees more than 30,000 commercial flights daily arriving and leaving European airports across the Continent. In contrast, the United States has more than 175,000 flights daily in 2020, prior to the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent pandemic

According to data from Etias.info, some of the biggest airports in Europe by surface area include:

  • Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, Italy at 29km². Located outside of central Rome, this airport was first opened in 1960 to deal with the large influx of tourists for the Rome Olympics. It boasts 3 runways and 3 terminals, 2 of which are currently operational.
  • Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport, France at 21km². This airport in the south of France already offers 3 passenger terminals and plans are already in motion to extend the number of runways to four.
  • Paris Orly Airport, France at 15.3km². The second-biggest airport in France, Paris Orly was previously the main entry point to the French capital but has since been replaced in that function by Charles de Gaulle Airport.
  • Charles de Gaulle, the biggest airport in the whole of Europe, has a total area of 32.37km². Located outside of Paris and opened in 1974, it has 3 terminals (including 7 sub-terminals inside terminal 2), and 4 runways. Although it is the largest airport in Europe, Charles de Gaulle Airport is only the second-busiest in the EU, with 78 million passengers passing through in 2019.

The busiest airport in Europe is actually Heathrow International, located west of London in the UK. As the busiest airport in the EU, Heathrow welcomed over 80 million passengers in 2019. Heathrow is also one of the largest airports in Europe, with a surface area of 12.27km².
